The SEAT León TDI engine is set to be ineligible for the 2013 FIA European Touring Car Championship, restricting the competitors to using 2.0 normally aspirated engines, as were used in the WTCC up until 2011. The TDI engine has been used in ETCC since 2009.
The 2.0 TDI engine was very successful last year in the ETCC claiming victories in 7 out of 8 rounds, Fernando Monje claimed 6 victories on this way to claiming the 2013 FIA ETCC S2000 title.
The TDI engine was effectively excluded from the 2012 WTCC with Tom Boardman of Special Tuning Racing (STR) being the only exception. SEAT Sport could not supply STR with two 1.6T engines in time so Tom ran the TDI engine up until the Portugal round.
The TDI engine has not been used in BTCC since 2008 when SEAT Sport pulled out at the end of the season following 10 wins for the TDI Leon between Jason Plato and Darren Turner.
SEAT Sport claimed 2 World Touring Car Championships with the TDI engine in 2008 & 2009.
