Martorell – SEAT and Volkswagen Group in Spain Executive Vice-president for Government and Institutional Affairs Ramón Paredes this afternoon has accepted the ABC Award for Best Car of the Year 2014 recognising the SEAT Leon from Spanish Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria. With this distinction, the Spanish brand’s model has become the country’s indisputable leader, whose success is not only measured by the excellent reviews and feedback garnered from trade press specialists, but also by the encouraging sales record since its launch.
The award ceremony was held in ABC headquarters in Madrid and was attended by José Manuel Soria, Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism; Jorge Fernández Díaz, Interior Minister; Ana Botella, Mayor of Madrid; Emilio Gutiérrez, Mayor of Leon; Ramón Paredes, SEAT and Volkswagen Group in Spain Executive Vice-president for Government and Institutional Affairs; Mikel Palomera, SEAT Spain director; Catalina Luca de Tena, President of ABC; Enrique de Ybarra e Ybarra, President of Vocento; Luis Enríquez, managing director of Vocento; and Bieito Rubido, director of ABC.

This award is especially relevant to the company, as it has been 28 years since a SEAT model has won it”, said Ramón Paredes, SEAT and Volkswagen Group in Spain Executive Vice-president for Government and Institutional Affairs. “The Leon is a fully home-grown product that has succeeded in becoming a ‘prophet in its own land’, meaning that every Leon unit sold by SEAT helps to increase employment, investment and Spain’s GDP, as well as promote ‘Spain Brand’ products all over the world. Furthermore, this award successfully concludes the launch of the new Leon”.
Further proof of the Leon’s success are the registered sales figures for the first two months of 2014. In January and February, sales of the Leon went up by 46% compared to the same period in 2013, and 18,700 units were delivered globally. Likewise, sales have grown in Spain by 20.9% and the Leon was the best-selling car nationally in the month of February. Furthermore, over 20,000 orders for the family-oriented Leon ST estate have been made since production began in the last quarter of 2013. All of these considerations have led to increasing production of the Leon with a new shift on Line 2 at the Martorell facilities, which was implemented last Monday.
Receiving the ABC Award for Best Car of the Year 2014 comes at a perfect time for the new Leon. With a complete offer that includes three body styles (a 5-door, the 3-door SC and the family-oriented ST), the Leon has become the standard-bearer within its segment. Moreover, the range will be expanding this year with the addition of the new CUPRA version, recently presented at the Geneva Motor Show, and 4Drive all-wheel drive technology for the Leon ST.
