Hi all,

I’m new to the forum and thought i’d say hello.

I’m looking into getting a MK3 Leon FR,I currently drive a Mk2 pre face lift FR TDI. I just wondered what people’s thoughts were regarding the MK3 FR, both the 150 petrol and 184 TDI, with respect to performance / running costs / mpg because got a 50 mile round trip to work. Thanks in advance.

I do love the FR S Tech styling designed by Jennings Seat.

I’ve got a 1.4 before they fitted the ACT150 engine and I’m very happy with it. The fuel economy isn’t great, but I mostly do short journeys (15 mile round trip to work!). On a long run back up the M1/A1 from Dewsbury last weekend I got an indicated 53 mpg on the trip computer, but more typically it’s low 40’s. From the real world figures I’ve seen on other websites (whatcar, Honest John) it doesn’t look like the ACT technology makes that much difference in the real world. However the extra 10 bhp would be nice!

I can’t comment on how it would compare with the 184 diesel because I haven’t driven one. I would imagine that from a performance comparison you would be better off comparing the 1.8 petrol (180 bhp). I didn’t go for the diesel because I don’t cover that many miles and I’d had the dpf warning light come on a couple of times on my last car (Mazda 6). However, with a 50 mile round trip to work I shouldn’t think that would be a problem for you.

I bought a 184FR ST last year, 1st Seat, and have been very pleased.
I don’t floor the pedal at every opportunity, as I try to drive smoothly (to avoid complaints from SWMBO in passenger seat) but I do press on, and on runs regularly get 55+mpg, at 75+ on motorways; even trolling into town (8 miles each way on crap roads, it returns 48-53 average.
when I was ultra careful the first week I had it I did a 450 mile round trip to Blackburn and got 63, but I was being really careful with the revs.
From what I’ve seen on other forums, the 150 TDi doesn’t get many more MPG, because it needs more revs to get to speed, whereas the 184 has loads of power and torque.
Mine being an ST, it’s heavier than a 3 or 5 door, and the panoramic sunroof must add some weight as well.
Try them both. Bet you go for the 184:-)

I should be collecting my new FR ACT 150PS on the 25/26th March so quite impressed with the fuel consumption mentioned by JohnE, I decided to go for petrol as we don’t do very high mileage so diesel was not considered, my current car a Ford Kuga has only done 5800 miles in 22 months and is a diesel but we do have another car a Fiesta which is petrol and is used for short trips. The idea is to just have one car that both my wife and I will use as she has now retired so doesn’t need a car for work, only hope is that we don’t both need the car at the same time but we shall see.

In regard to your 184 andrewpain, would you say its more like the pre facelift PD 170bhp engine to drive? I read on another forum that the MK2 PD170 is more punchy & feels quicker than the face lift CR 170. Thats if you have driven a Mk2.

Interesting comment regarding the 150 tdi with the revs to get to speed.

I test drove the MK3 150 tdi and I was expecting it to be slightly slower than mine, but I didn’t find it as fun to drive.

haven’t driven a Mk2 Adam, so can’t comment about the 170.
I find the 184 delightful!
in the real world I don’t think there’s much to choose in terms of MPG between the 150TDi and 184, it’s the upfront cost and slight additional insurance. mine only costs £20 a year road tax.
have seen posts about 150ACT delivering between 40 and 50 Mpg, and it’s quite a torquey engine.
Had I known about DPF, and the current campaign to demonise diesel, maybe I’d have looked at petrol more closely. But the 184 got such good reviews, and has such good performance figures I was virtually sold before I drove one….
