My remote locking key started to play up a few weeks ago but now it does not unlock or lock the car at all. I can manually operate the locking system by putting the key in the driver’s door, so, I suspect that the remote control needs reprogramming. I have tried the advice in the handbook about synchronizing the key but this does not do the job. I can occasionally unlock the driver’s door by pressing the “unlock” button several times but then it stops working again. I have tried new batteries but this makes no difference.

Does anyone know how to reprogram the remote control? I have owned the car from new since March 2003 and after 8 years of good service, I suppose something had to go wrong.

Sounds like you need a new key with it being an intermittant failiure. Programming needs to be carried out by a proffessional and isnt cheap!

Have now got used to turning the key in the door lock to unlock and lock the car but it’s a bit long-winded. I plan to ask the local Seat agent here in the Algarve to look at it when the car goes in for the next service. If they want too much money then I will continue without the convenience of a remote control but I do miss it.

Is it just a case of replacing the battery? I had this issue, and just replaced the battery…

Not all of them need reprogramming after, but even if you did get it reprogrammed it still would not work if the battery is dead.

Reprogramming a key does not cost much mate, whatever country you are in 🙂

Replacing the battery made no difference as I said before. The LED sometimes flashes once but then stops completely and the remote control fails to lock or unlock the car. Servicing time is a long way off but I can put up with the inconvenience.

I was passing by my Seat agent yesterday and called into have my remote control key tested. I was assured that it had failed completely and the only solution was a replacement part which then had to be programmed to the car. The cost – 55 Euros or about 48 Pounds. I bit the bullet and paid the price.
