Why is it that the VW Golf is sometimes referred to as a Rabbit?

The Golf has been called various names throughout the world and ‘Rabbit’ is just one of them. The VW Rabbit was/is a U.S. and Canada thing, that’s what they’re called. Mind you, this was only for the MK1 and the MK5.

In Mexico they’re actually called the Volkswagen Caribe too, MK1 only 😉

Thanks c3ptik – that’s solved one of life’s great mysteries.
I sort of had an idea but wasn’t certain.
